Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has clarified that the state government cannot maintain the current palliative distribution program aimed at supporting vulnerable households in all 31 local government areas. During a media briefing held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Uyo, to mark the state\’s 37th anniversary on September 23, 2024, Governor Eno highlighted that while the food aid program, which includes items like garri, rice, and beans, was a temporary relief measure, it is not a sustainable solution to tackle poverty long-term.
The governor emphasized that more permanent solutions should be pursued, particularly through increased agricultural activity. He urged residents to engage in farming, promising state support in the form of farming inputs like fertilizers and improved seedlings to boost food production.
Reflecting on the ongoing palliative program, Governor Eno tasked the Bulk Purchase Agency (BPA) with ensuring the fair and transparent distribution of food supplies. Dr. Daniel Akpan, the agency\’s chairman, assured recipients in Okobo Local Government Area of a smooth process. He explained that the use of a voucher system has been introduced to ensure accountability.
The governor’s efforts have been commended by key stakeholders, including Princess Felicia Bassey, a prominent political figure, and Anthony Antigha, Okobo\’s transition committee chairman, who both expressed their gratitude for the assistance being provided during a period of severe economic difficulties in the country. They praised Governor Eno for taking concrete action to support the poor amidst the ongoing food crisis.
